Note Takers

Basic Function:

To provide quality collegiate notetaking, a support service, to deaf and hard of hearing students enrolled in Lake City Community College.

 Responsibilities:

-To provide quality, informative notes.

- Demonstrate good organizational skills.

-Demonstrate reliability through regular attendance to class as well as punctuality.

-Demonstrate neat, legible penmanship.

-Adhere to professional notetaking techniques and mechanics.

-Notes must be delivered to the program office the day in which they are taken.

 Experience:

-Matriculated students willing to take notes in courses relating to their major preferred.

-Successful completion (B or better) or current enrollment in the class in which one takes notes (preferred).

Knowledge/Ability/Skill Requirements:

-Ability to write clear and concise notes.

-Ability to manage time effectively.

-Ability to seek assistance when necessary.

 Notetaking Techniques:

- Be on time to class.

- Solicit feedback on the quality of your notes from the instructor.

- Establish a report with the deaf and hard of hearing student and ask for feedback.

- Leave your own biases out of the notes. Regardless what your opinion is of the course, instructor, students, do not interject your feelings into the notes.

- Notes must be brought to the DSS office for copying and distribution the same day so the students can pick up their notes from their mailbox and be able to do their homework each night.

- Unless you are a member of the class, you are not to participate in classroom discussion.

Notetaking Mechanics:

- Number, title, and date the upper right-hand corner of each page (Ex. Pg. 1, Freshman Comp 1, 7/14/08) and time of the class.

- Use black pen. All notes are copied and distributed. Black ink copies the best.

- Write legibly. Make sure your writing is easy to read.

- If you are unsure of a word or idea, leave a blank space in your notes and fill it in later.

- Use correct spelling. Check unfamiliar technical terms.

- Make good use of paper. Space out the ideas, skip a line once in a while, and divide page into columns.

- Practice listening and storing information as you write. Leave a space to fill in what you missed.

- Emphasize important information (Ex. - underline important words and phrases. You can also use circles, check marks, and asterisks to indicate important information

- Organize the material in an understandable format.

- Define difficult vocabulary.

- Use meaningful examples

- Use complete sentences.

- Use diagrams and illustrations effectively.
