an Introduction...

Years ago accreditation standards focused on institutional resources, structures, and processes. There was an emphasis on tangible characteristics such as fiscal solvency, faculty credentials, curricular unity, and governance structures. These continue to be important in accreditation, but they are not sufficient for demonstrating institutional effectiveness. Standards and evaluation processes have been revised to make the focus on student learning outcomes vital to the accreditation process. We should be asking ourselves the following questions:
  • What are students learning?
  • Is it the right kind of learning?
  • What difference is the institution making in their lives?
  • What evidence does an institution have that ensures it is worth the student’s investment?
There are 73 compliance points that we have to address for SACS. Compliance point 2.12 is our QEP or Quality Enhancement Plan. This will describe a course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic related to enhancing student learning. This is our opportunity to enhance the overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on issues that we consider important to our student body. All other compliance points focus on the past and present. The QEP is an opportunity for us to be creative and look to the future. We want to create “life-long learners!”
