Program Information

Cosmetology Program

The Cosmetology program is a one-year program with classes meeting Monday through Thursday, 8:00 - 4:30.  New classes start in August and January each year.  August classes end in July the following year and January classes end in December of the same year.  Students completing the Cosmetology program will be Licensed Cosmetologists after passing the Florida State exam.

Specialty classes in Nails and Esthetics are also offered for students who do not wish to enroll in the Cosmetology program, but wish to focus in the Nail and Esthetics industry.

Nail Specialty

The Nail Specialty classes are offered twice a year with the first class beginning in January and ending in May.  The second nail class starts in May and ends in December.  Upon completion of the nail specialty course, students will be a Licensed Nail Specialist.

Esthetics Specialty

The Esthetics (skin care) Specialty classes are offered twice a year with the first class beginning in January and ending in May.  The second class starts in August and ends in December.  Students completing the Esthetics Specialist course will become Licensed Estheticians.

Evening specialty classes for Nails and Esthetics may be offered as determined by the demand for these classes.  Students interested in the evening specialty classes should contact the Cosmetology Department (386-754-4264) for current information on these classes.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for any of the cosmetology programs, a student must:

  • Be at least 16 years old and either a high school graduate or have a GED certificate or be a non-high school graduate who has been out of school at least six months;
  • Complete a basic minimum skills test administered by the Collegewide Learning Lab and score a minimum of 8.0 for each of the math and language components, and 9.0 for the reading component and;
  • Interview with the program instructor before admission is approved.

Admission requirements must be completed no less than 30 days prior to the beginning of class.  Students will be accepted after applications are received in the Cosmetolotgy Department and all requirements listed above are completed.

Courses and Descriptions

Students will be tested in each cosmetology area and evaluation credit will be awarded accordingly.  Students must make a "C" or better to continue to the next course in the program.

The normal sequences of required classes for Cosmetology students starting in August are as follows:

Course Descriptions

CSP 0010 Manicuring/Pedicuring

Study of manicuring and pedicuring techniques for both male and female, hot oil, plain, electrical, and nail information and safety precautions.  Manicuring and pedicuring includes acrylic, gel & silk wrap nails, nail art, and airbrush techniques.

COS 0510 Scalp and Hair Care

Study of hair treatments, scalp treatment, manipulations, related chemistry, and light therapy.  Hair and scalp treatment techniques for both male and female.  Study of related anatomy and physiology, draping, scientific hair brushing technique, shampooing manipulations, rinsing, production information, safety precautions, and related chemistry for both male and female.

COS 0301C Hair Cutting and Shaping

The development of knowledge and skills in the use of scissors and razor for basic shaping and styling of hair on both male and female, as well as safety precautions.

COS 0400 Hair Styling/Designing Procedures

Developing the knowledge of and skill in molding, setting, pin curls, roller curls, press styling, iron curling, hot combs, and blower techniques.  Includes study of artistry in hair styling, style for both male and female, safety precautions, related anatomy and physiology.  Study of the types of wigs and hair pieces, methods of cleaning, styling, shaping, and conditioning, for males and females.

COS 0011 Orientation/Introduction to Cosmetology

Professional ethics required of the cosmetologist, includes study of Florida law, care and use of equipment, personality, hygiene, and personal projection.

CSP 0006C Esthetics and Skin Care 1

Study of facial treatment, including the related anatomy and physiology.  Techniques of makeup, lash and brow tints, eyebrow arches, safety precautions, chemistry of cosmetics, and use of 8 in 1 machines for both male and female.

CSP 0007 Esthetics and Skin Care 2

Advanced facial treatments, including Microdermabrasion and Light Therapy.  Study of facial treatment, and related anatomy and physiology.  Techniques of makeup, lash and brow tints, eyebrow arches, and safety precautions.

COS 0644 & COS 0640 Chemical Hair Restructuring 1 & 2

Study and analysis of hair in regard to procedures of permanent product information and cold wave chemistry.  Techniques for both male and female.  Study the methods for chemical straightening of normal and tinted hair, and product control techniques for both male and female.  Related chemistry.

COS 0700 Hair Coloring/Bleaching 1

Study and analysis of hair and the chemistry of color, permanent coloring, bleaching, frosting, streaking, toners, and corrective work, as well as safety precautions.  Hair coloring techniques for both males and females.

COS 0760 Hair Coloring/Bleaching 2

Includes the study and procedures of hair lightening and toning techniques (deleting natural pigment & adding artificial color).  Includes safety precautions.

COS 0870 Salon Management

Practice in the operation of a salon, including developing a resume, employee interviews, shop management, equipment care, sales development, and employability skills required to succeed in the industry.

COS 0963 Prep for State Certification

Review Bacteriology/Sanitation/Sterilization, Chemical Hair Restruction 1 & 2, Hair Shaping, Scalp and Hair Care, Hair Coloring/Bleaching, Hair Styling and Designing Procedures, Esthetics and Skin Care 1 & 2, Manicuring and Pedicuring, Salon Management, and Florida Law Booklet.

Cosmetology Club

Each of the cosmetology classes has their own club.   The clubs do fundraisers such as bake sales, car washes, talent shows, and dinners to raise money for hair shows and other functions.
