MISSION
The mission of Lake City Community College is to provide superior, yet affordable programs of quality education and to enrich the lives of citizens in North Central Florida.
The mission of the library is to support the educational and enrichment goals of the College through a well-organized collection of print and non-print materials, providing instruction and access to information that is not bounded by time or place.
"The ideal library is one with one or two librarians, one or two library clerks, a handful of student assistants, a homogeneous identifiable clientele, and a collection large enough to suit that clientele." -Hugh Atkinson, "The Impact of New Technology on Library Organization" in the Bowker Annual of Library and Book Trade Information, 29th ed.
If you are a student, or a community patron, the above quote is probably all you need to know about the mission of our Library. If you are faculty, or staff, or a representative of a governing body or an accrediting agency, please read on:
To further elaborate, the mission of the Library is to maintain primary and secondary materials in a collection of well-organized print and non-print formats, needed to support the purposes and programs of Lake City Community College, providing programs and services necessary to achieve the educational goals of the college as outlined in the mission statement of the institution (see above).
To ensure bibliographic control through the maintenance of adequate records of materials, including the electronic catalog, indexes and bibliographies, and access to external databases through the state library system or state-sponsored regional consortia, or the Library Information Network for Community Colleges, LINCC.
To maintain and develop a sufficient collection for the support of educational and public service programs. To consult faculty in an organized manner concerning the development of the collection to support instruction, and likewise to consult with students, staff, the community, and the Learning Resources Committee on matters of collection development. To maintain a policy governing selection and weeding based on user needs.
To encourage access by maintaining adequate and attractive facilities which aid in the effective use of resource materials. To respond to student needs by maintaining adequate hours of operation as well as sufficient and capable staffing.
To evaluate library programs on a regular and systematic basis. To provide orientation and bibliographic instruction in a variety of formats, thereby improving access to information. To coordinate with teaching faculty in providing bibliographic instruction geared toward program requirements.
To review periodically the professional qualifications of the professional and support staff. To provide Workforce and Community Education opportunities for learning resources personnel. To maintain policies concerning faculty status, salary, and contractual security for library personnel, who must be informed of such policies.
