BOOKS AND MATERIALS

We have three collections in the library: circulating collection (items that you may check out), reference (items to be used in the library) and reserves (items kept in a special shelving area behind the circulation desk and placed there by instructors for use by students in accomplishing specific course assignments).  Materials in the Reserve collection are filed alphabetically by title.  Materials in the other two collections are filed according to the Dewey Decimal System.  In general terms, the Dewey system is numeric and it classifies items according to their subject area.  The broad subjects are:

000’s - bibliographies, unexplained phenomena, libraries and publishing, computer books
100’s - philosophy
200’s - religions
300’s - social sciences
400’s - books about languages, and dictionaries
500’s - science
600’s - applied science and technology
700’s - art, music, theater
800’s - literature and literary criticism
900’s - history and biography

If you see a book on the online catalog screen with a Dewey number of 921, that book would be a biography and it would be on the mezzanine in the 900 section.

If the call number on the book spine has [REF] in front of the numbers, it is a reference book. Reference books are located on the first floor, along the north wall and front of the building.

If the call number has - Reserves - after it, the item will be located on a shelf behind the circulation desk at the front of the library.

For reserve materials and reference items that do not leave the library, we have copiers in the library.  Copies are $.10 each.  If the item you need is lengthy, please talk with a library staff member.  Perhaps you could remove the item from the building long enough to make less expensive copies elsewhere in town, or perhaps we could make an exception and allow you to check the item out overnight or over the weekend.  We will work with you to meet your research needs. 

Please return all library items when they are due, and in the condition they were in when you checked them out.

CIRCULATION SERVICES

  • Library Card: Get your ID card bar coded, so that it becomes your library card.
  • Check out, renew, and return circulating materials. 
  • Renewals: You can renew your checked out items by phone, and also online by selecting the "My Account" tab on the Book Search page.  You do not need to bring your books to the library to renew them.
  • Book Limits: We limit student users to three books per topic, and ten items total.  Community users are limited to three items. Like most of our rules, we will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis and allow you to check out more items, if you can justify your request.
  • Fines: We charge .25 per day overdue fines, up to a maximum of $10 per book.  We also charge for loss or damage to materials, depending on the circumstances.  Pick up the form to pay the charge at the cashier’s office.
  •  Reserve materials. You need to check these out, even though you just use the materials in the library.
  • Interlibrary loan requests: Return at the circulation desk.
  • Orientation Worksheet: We have hard copies at the desk, or you can download this from the Orientation page online.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The LINCC system was funded by the State Legislature, in part, to promote resource sharing.  It is getting faster and easier to acquire books from other community college libraries in Florida.  In the course of your library orientation you will learn how to identify books at other LINCC libraries, and how to request books online from those libraries.  Remember that while we often get I.L.L. books in less than a week, it sometimes takes longer.  You should plan and begin your research early in the term.  If you wait until just before your paper is due, there is a greater chance that the materials you want will already be checked out, or that it may take longer to acquire them.  Start early, especially if you think that you will need to use interlibrary loan services.  Any staff member can take your request.

REFERENCE

We respond to requests for reference assistance in person, by phone, by mail, or e-mail.  Our first priority is to serve students who need assistance in completing coursework and class assignments, or research.  We also place importance on serving faculty members who are preparing course materials, and of course, we also serve the general public to the extent that our staffing level allows.

LOAN PERIODS

  • BOOKS - 2 WEEKS

  • RESERVE MATERIALS - PER INSTRUCTOR

PERIODICALS, REFERENCE, AND NON-FICTION FILMS NORMALLY ARE USED IN THE LIBRARY OR CHECKED OUT TO INSTRUCTORS FOR USE IN CLASS.  EXCEPTIONS ARE MADE ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS.  SPEAK WITH A LIBRARIAN IF YOU NEED TO BORROW ANY ITEM IN THE COLLECTION. 

Lost Materials – The charge on lost materials shall be the cost of replacement, plus a processing fee of $10.00 per item.

Library Privileges – In addition to freezing student records, library borrowing privileges will be suspended for students who are delinquent in returning library materials, until all materials are returned and charges are paid for lost or damaged items.

If a student displays a pattern of disregard for library materials, repeatedly losing or damaging items or keeping them beyond their due dates, the library director may suspend the student's borrowing privilege for up to one year.  This applies in particular to interlibrary loan items from other libraries.  We depend on our reputation for reliable return of materials.  A lost or damaged interlibrary loan could result in loss of interlibrary loan privileges.  The student may appeal through the college judiciary process as outlined in the Student Handbook.
