PHYSICAL SCIENCE

AST 1002 Astronomy and Lab (4 credits)

Survey of astronomy; telescopes and instruments, structure and formation of the solar system, stars and solar motions; the Milky Way Galaxy, other galaxies and the nature of the universe.  Course includes laboratory component providing an exploration of our universe through exercises involving observations of celestial objects and analysis of observational data.  Telescopes, binoculars, and the naked eye are used to observe the sun, the moon, planets, constellations, stars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of MAT 0024 with a minimum grade of "C" or score out on the CPT exam.

GLY 1000 Geology and Lab (4 credits)

A study of the history and processes of the physical features of the Earth, its internal dynamics and its surficial weathering, erosion, and sedimentary processes.  Laboratory component includes examination of mineral, rock, and fossil specimens, interpretation of topographic maps and aerial photographs.  Selected area field trips exemplifying some common geomorphic processes may be involved.

GLY 1001 Earth Science (3 credits)

Elementary study of topics from meteorology, geology, and astronomy, including the atmosphere, various weather phenomena, gas laws, types of rocks, surface features of earth and processes which caused them, internal structures of earth, earth-moon system, solar system, and other stellar systems.  Note: Students who have passed AST 1002, GLY 1000, or MET 1010, may not take GLY 1001.

PSC 1341 Physical Science (3 credits)

Elementary study of physics and chemistry, including kinematics, dynamics, work and energy, wave motion, heat, atomic and nuclear physics, radioactivity, fusion and fission, periodic table, compound formation and stoichiometry.  Prerequisite: Completion of MAT 0024 with a C or better or a satisfactory score on an approved placement test.
