BSC 1005 Biological Principles for NonMajors (3 credits)
General education nonlab course for students not majoring in biology or students not majoring in tracks requiring BSC 2010. This course features elementary general biology involving cells, organisms, genetics, evolution, ecology, and behavior.
BSC 2010 General Biology 1 and Lab (4 credits)
Analysis of the structure, function, and organization of biological molecules into cellular structures, cellular growth, metabolism and its regulation, genetics including growth, replication, mutation and repair mechanisms, biotechnology, and evolution of organisms. Lab Component. Prerequisite: Completion of BSC 2010 with a "C" or better.
BSC 2011 General Biology 2 and Lab (4 credits)
This course is a continuation of BSC 2010 that familiarizes the students with the diversity of organisms, comparative plant and animal physiology, introduction to anatomy, developmental biology, population biology, ecology, and applications to clinical sciences. Course includes a lab component. Prerequisite: BSC 2010.
BSC 2084 Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology 1 (4 credits)
This is an essentials level course in Anatomy and Physiology with a laboratory component, designed for Paramedic and Dental Hygiene students. It is a one semester course with a laboratory component, carrying four semester hours of credit. It is designed to provide the student with a solid background, with emphasis on knowledge required in the clinical setting, and on clinical thinking skills. The course will also be suitable for General Education requirements as well as students desiring to enter other Allied Health disciplines. It is NOT desgined for students desiring to enter the Nursing or Physcial Therapist Assistant programs. Prerequisite: Completion of REA 0002, ENC 0020, MAT 0002 or socre out on the CPT exam.
BSC 2085 Anatomy and Physiology I (3 credits)
The first course in human anatomy and physiology is a survey of the chemistry, structure, and function of the human body to include the following topics: cells and cytology, tissue and histology, the integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system. The course is designed for students in the health related, biological, and physical education programs. Prerequisites: Completion of REA 0002, ENC 0020, MAT 0024 or score out of the CPT exam. Corequisite: BSCL 2085.
BSCL 2085 Anatomy and Physiology I Lab (1 credit)
Laboratory exercise which emphasizes the biochemical, physiological, and anatomical principles associated with classroom work. Such laboratory exercises include microscopic observations, experimentation, and the study of skeletal materials and anatomical models, as well as dissections. Lab fee. Prerequisites: Completion of REA 0002, ENC 0020, MAT 0024 or score out of the CPT exam. Corequisite: BSC 2085.
BSC 2086 Anatomy and Physiology II (3 credits)
A continuation of the anatomy and physiology sequence about the human body to include the following topics: special senses, endocrine system, circulatory system, lymphatic system and body defenses, respiratory system, digestive system, nutrition and cellular energetics, urinary system, fluid and electrolyte dynamics, reproductive system, and genetics. Prerequisites: Completion of BSC 2085/BSCL 2085 with a minimum grade of C. Co-requisite: BSCL 2086.
BSC 2086L Anatomy and Physiology II Lab (1 credit)
Laboratory exercises which are coordinated with the classroom work in Anatomy & Physiology II. Such laboratory exercises include microscopic observations, experimentation, the study of skeletal materials and anatomical models as well as dissections, and emphasizes the biochemical, physiological, and anatomical principles associated with classroom work. Lab fee. Prerequisite: Completion of BSC 2085/BSCL 2085 with a minimum grade of C. Co-requisite: BSC 2086.
BOT 2010 Botany I (4 credits)
(alternates years with Zoology)
Survey of vascular plants using live and preserved materials. The structure, function, and natural relationships of plant life with be investigated through field work and laboratory studies. Lab fee. Prerequisites: Completion of REA 0002, ENC 0020, and MAT 0002 with a "C" or better or score out on the CPT exam.
MCB 2010 Microbiology (3 credits)
Study of microbiology which includes history, biochemistry, microbial anatomy, microbial growth and metabolism, microbial genetics, genetic engineering, pathogenicity, immunology, and microbial disease. Prerequisites: Completion of BSC 2010, BSC 2085/BSCL 2085, BOT 2010, or ZOO 2010. Corequisite: MCBL 2010.
MCBL 2010 Microbiology (1 credit)
Study of microbial staining techniques, isolation methods, microbial identification, genetic engineering, and aseptic techniques. Lab fee. Prerequisites: Completion of BSC 2010, BSC 2085/BSCL 2085, BOT 2010, or ZOO 2010. Corequisite: MCB 2010.
ZOO 2010C General Zoology (4 credits) GR
(alternates years with Botany)
Survey of the invertebrate and vertebrate animals using live and preserved materials. Study of animal life, its development, anatomy, physiology, ecology, and natural relationships. Appropriate laboratory experiment and field trips included. Lab fee. Prerequisite: Completion of REA 0002, ENC 0020, MAT 0024 or satisfactory scores on the CPT exam.
