Job Opportunities

The majority of LCCC Forest Operations Technology graduates seek and gain employment with vaStudents in plantsrious Forest Industry Companies, private Forestry Consultants, and government agencies in the Southeastern United States.  These jobs involve all aspects of technical forestry work and the majority of the associated technical duties are typically performed outdoors.  The three major areas of employment are:

  1. Land Management – Assisting a company or a private landowner with timberland management and reforestation efforts on their lands.  It is not uncommon for a company to own and/or manage a 1 million-acre land base.  These duties include, but are not limited to, managing contractors for compliance who perform; logging, site-preparation (both chemical and mechanical), tree planting, fertilization, and the use of prescribed fire, thinning, and other silvicultural activities.
  2. Procurement – Assisting a Forest Products company with the purchase of wood products for their mill.  These purchases (stumpage, logs, chips, etc.) are from other companies, private landowners or government agencies.  Usual duties include the management of contract loggers.
  3. Private Forestry Consultants – These technical duties include contract forestry work for private landowners or industrial forest companies with all of the above mentioned possible job responsibilities.
