Allied Health Continuing Education

The College's new Medical Technology Building houses spacious classrooms with state-of-the-art equipment. The College offers a variety of allied health programs in both associate in science degree programs as well as certificate programs.
ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMS
Associate in Science (A.S.) degree programs are designed for the student seeking training in business, health, technical, industrial, or public service fields. Applicants must meet all general admission requirements, special program admission requirements, and achieve acceptable scores on the College placement exam. Associate in Science degrees are not designed to transfer to four-year institutions.
Emergency Medical Services Technology
The associate in science degree program in Emergency Medical Services Technology prepares paramedics for employment as EMS supervisors, coordinators, operation managers, and service directors. This limited access program has special admission requirements and a minimum of 72 credit hours is required for program completion. The associate in science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant program is designed to prepare students to assist a licensed Physical Therapist in the physical rehabilitation of patients. Physical Therapist Assistants generally work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, school systems, and home health agencies. In Florida alone, over 2,000 new jobs were expected between 1990 and 2005. This limited access program is highly competitive and has special admission requirements. The associate in science degree in Nursing qualifies students to take the national licensing examination to become a registered nurse. Ninety percent of Lake City Community College's Nursing graduates have passed this national exam for the past five years. This challenging program of study is limited access and has many special admission requirements. Final selection for admission to the Nursing program is based upon a detailed point system. Lake City Community College offers opportunities for Licensed Practical Nurses to become Registered Nursing students through an accelerated Registered Nursing program. Because of the common body of knowledge between the Practical Nursing program and the Registered Nursing program, it is possible for accepted Licensed Practical Nurses to complete this program in approximately fourteen months. CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
Certificate programs are designed for students who wish to enroll in relatively short-term training programs for immediate entry into the job market.
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate is designed to prepare a student for employment at the basic pre-hospital emergency care level. The program is the initial entry level for a career in emergency medical services and is a prerequisite for paramedic training. This limited access program has special admission requirements. The Phlebotomy program prepares students for employment as phlebotomists. A phlebotomist obtains blood by skin puncture and is an integral part of a clinical laboratory. This limited access program is full-time for six weeks and has special admission requirements. For more information contact the Medical Laboratory Technology Director. The Paramedic certificate prepares students for employment as paramedics functioning at the advanced pre-hospital emergency care level. Applicants must hold current State of Florida certification as an EMT. This limited access program has other special admission requirements. For more information contact the EMS program director.
The Practical Nursing program is a twelve month program designed to assist a student with entry-level nursing employment in such areas as hospitals, physician's offices, or nursing care facilities.
