Dual Enrollment

What is Dual Enrollment ?

Dual Enrollment is an accelerated program that allows qualified students to fulfill high school graduation requirements while simultaneously gaining college or vocational credits toward a certificate, diploma or a college degree.

The program is a cooperative effort between Lake City Community College, the school districts of Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Union counties, qualified private schools, and home education programs in the five county
school district. The program provides enhanced learning opportunities for qualified high school students through effective use of community college courses and resources.

The Dual Enrollment program is authorized by Florida Statute  240.116, Florida Statute and complies with the State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.0241 Articulation Plans for College Level Instructions for High School Students.

Who is eligible?

Dual Enrollment is dependent on academic readiness, social maturity, and motivation. Public school students must be recommended by the high school guidance counselor, principal or a designee to participate in Dual Enrollment. As required by Section 1008.30, of Florida Statutes, the College utilizes the State approved college placement testing system as a measure of academic readiness. The test scores may be no more than two years old. The program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who meet the required minimum test score levels and have the required GPA. The pupil must have minimum 3.0 high school unweighted grade point average on the 4.0 scale, and a 2.0 GPA for vocational courses.

Private Schools

Private high school students are eligible for the Dual Enrollment program. Participating schools must be in full compliance with Section 1002.42, and Section of 232.246, Florida Statute. To enroll in the program, the student's requirements are the same as public schools.

Home Education Program:

The student must be officially enrolled in a home education program and in compliance with Section 1002.41, Florida Statutes. The student must be at least 15 years of age and will not be eligible to participate in the Dual Enrollment program after their 19th birthday. The student must submit State approved college entrance test scores and these must be less than two years old from the day of class registration. More details can be found at Lake City Community College Testing Department.

What are the benefits of Dual Enrollment?

Public School Dual Enrollment students will not be assessed an application, matriculation fees, late fees, laboratory fees or textbook costs. Private and home educations schools are only responsible for their text books. Other fees are waived by the college.

Dual enrollment accelerates student's education. The grades earned as a Dual Enrollment student in high school become a part of the student's permanent high school record, as well as the college transcript.

Since Dual Enrollment offers challenging courses to students while still in high school, students need to consider future plans and outcomes earlier in life. Transition from high school to college becomes easier.

However, a student whose College GPA falls below 2.0 is ineligible to continue Dual Enrollment.
