Lake City Community College is located just outside
of Lake City, Florida in Columbia County. Lake City is easily
located on a map -- just look where Interstates 10 and 75 meet in
northern Florida. The college is located on the eastern side
of the county, and is bordered by the municipal airport and the
Osceola National Forest. Lake City is located approximately
40 miles north of Gainesville, 60 miles south of Valdosta, and 50
miles west of Jacksonville.
Lake City Community College -- one of only 28 community colleges in Florida -- was established in 1961 as Lake City Junior College and Forest Ranger School. It evolved on the site of the former Forest Ranger School, and became known as Lake City Community College in the early 1970s.
The college offers many programs to the residents of its
five-county service district. Its Golf and Landscape
Operations
program is recognized around the world as one of the finest, and
was designated a Center for Excellence by the Florida
Legislature.
Much of the faculty has been here for more than 10 years, and the institution offers academic excellence second to none. Recent studies show that LCCC students who go on to attend one of Florida's major universities -- such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, Florida A&M, etc. -- average a higher cumulative GPA than the mean GPA of students transferring from other community colleges around the state.
The LCCC campus sits on 100 acres of natural
woodlands, and was designated by Florida Leader Magazine as the
most beautiful college campus in Florida. The natural
surroundings contribute heavily to the ambiance of the college,
making the campus a quiet and secure area for study and
reflection.
The student population is almost a 50-50 mix of males and females, and is diverse in its composition. Students come here from around the world to take advantage of the college's outstanding programs in Golf and Landscape Operations, Allied Health, and Forest Technology.
